Thank you…for the support you have given me during the adoption process.

Rebecca (birth mother)

Just wanted to say thank you for being so great and wonderful through the adoption. You have done so much for me and been so amazing and supportive during a happy and bittersweet occasion. You went above and beyond for me, getting my prescriptions, taking me home from the hospital. you have always been there for me and truly made a difference. The adoption was not easy for me, was by far the most difficult decision I have ever faced, but I am at peace by knowing she is in great and loving hands. I will always be grateful and thankful to you and everyone who was involved with the adoption.

If you need additional assistance, we established an education scholarship fund in 2018 to assist birth parents who wish to further their educational goals following the successful adoptive placement of their child through Adoption & Beyond’s agency program. DOES THE PROSPECTIVE BIRTH FATHER OF THE BABY HAVE TO KNOW?

Kansas and Missouri law requires that the prospective birth father be notified of an adoption. In those situations where we are unable to locate the prospective birth father, other legal avenues are available to complete the adoption.

CAN I CHOOSE AND MEET THE PROSPECTIVE ADOPTIVE PARENTS?

YES! First, we do a thorough evaluation of the couple to assure that they are emotionally and financially prepared to parent a child. In addition to hours of personal interviews, we do police checks, gather references, obtain medical clearances, and verify employment. We have each family prepare a photo profile for you to view, so you can decide which family you like.

Most prospective birth parents choose to interview the prospective adoptive family before deciding on them for sure. We will work with you to help determine what type of relationship you want with the adoptive parents now and into the future.

WILL I GET TO SEE MY BABY AT THE HOSPITAL?

You are in charge of how much contact you want to have with the baby in the hospital. Some birth mothers choose to spend a limited amount of time with the baby opting for the adoptive family to start bonding with the baby immediately, while others choose to spend every minute with the baby while in the hospital.

HOW WILL I KNOW MY CHILD WILL BE OKAY?

Many birth parents request letters and pictures from the adoptive parents as the child grows and many families visit with each other regularly through the years. Continuing contact between the families is strongly encouraged. We will work with you to come up with a plan that is most comfortable for you.

WHAT ABOUT LIFE AFTER ADOPTION?

Following the signing of your adoption paperwork, the baby goes home from the hospital with the adoptive family. Your adoption coordinator stays connected to offer guidance and support to both you and the adoptive family as you adjust to your new normal. Both parties are encouraged to reach out to us as much as needed for as long as desired.

4. Choose an Adoptive Family

Review profiles of prospective adoptive families and select the one that feels right for your baby. Adoption & Beyond will provide you with various adoptive family profiles to consider, ensuring you find a loving, stable, and suitable match.

5. Establish Communication

If you desire an open or semi-open adoption, discuss your preferences for communication and contact with the adoptive family. You can create a plan that respects everyone’s needs and ensures ongoing connection.

6. Legal Process

Work with legal professionals (free of charge) to navigate the legal requirements of adoption. This includes consenting to the adoption and finalizing the legal documentation.

Adoption and Parental Rights: Consent and Custody

When considering adoption, it’s essential to understand the role of both parents and the legal requirements surrounding consent and custody. At Adoption & Beyond, we recognize the significance of parental rights and the importance of addressing your concerns regarding consent and custody throughout the adoption process. In this section, we’ll address common questions about placing a baby up for adoption without the father’s consent, a father’s ability to stop an adoption, and the possibility of a biological parent regaining custody after adoption.

Can You Place a Baby Up for Adoption Without the Father’s Consent?

One question often asked by birth mothers is whether they can place a baby up for adoption without the father’s consent. The answer to this question depends on your jurisdiction’s specific laws and regulations. In some cases, if the father’s identity or whereabouts are unknown or if he has abandoned the child, it may be possible to proceed with the adoption without his consent. However, it’s crucial to consult with an experienced adoption attorney who can guide you through the legal requirements and procedures in your specific situation. The laws regarding consent vary, and it’s essential to ensure that all necessary steps are followed to protect everyone’s rights.

Can a Father Stop an Adoption?

Another concern that birth mothers may have is whether the father can stop an adoption from proceeding. In most jurisdictions, a father has the right to contest an adoption and potentially prevent the adoption process. However, the ability to stop an adoption varies depending on the circumstances and legal requirements. If the father is actively involved in the child’s life, expresses his desire to parent and actively takes steps to preserve his parental rights, his consent may be required to proceed. It’s important to work with an experienced adoption attorney who can guide you through the legal process and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to address the father’s rights and potential objections.

Can a Biological Parent Regain Custody After Adoption?

Once an adoption is finalized, the biological parent’s rights are generally terminated, and the adoptive parents assume full legal and custodial rights and responsibilities for the child. In most cases, it is highly unlikely for a biological parent to regain custody after the adoption is finalized. Adoption is a legal and permanent process that establishes a new parent-child relationship. However, specific circumstances, such as fraud or other legal irregularities, may provide grounds for contesting an adoption. It’s crucial to consult with an experienced adoption attorney who can review your case and provide guidance based on the specific circumstances.
