How to Build an Adoption Profile to Stand Out

Adoption, Families

The decision to adopt a child is one of the most exciting and fulfilling moments for any family. However, it’s not uncommon to experience some stress when it comes to completing your adoption profile. You can ensure you optimize your adoption profile by using these tips to help you stand out from the crowd.

Write From the Heart

How you write your profile is very important as it helps paint a picture of who you are and what you offer. Not everyone is a born writer with the talent to coin phrases and draw their readers in. However, when you write from the heart, your emotions and desires will shine through.

Break Your Copy Up With Headings

Use interesting headings to break up the copy, such as “Our Story,” “Our Home & Community,” “Meet Our Family,” “Our Work,” “A Few of Our Favorites,” and “Thoughts About Parenting.” This allows people to get a well thought out, organized look at who you are as a family.

Be Descriptive

Make it easy for the expecting parents to picture the life their child will have with you. Describe your pastimes and be specific about them – whether it is your typical weekend or the games you loved as a child that you can’t wait to share with your child someday.

Share Stories

Be creative and share stories that will welcome the expecting mom into knowing more about you. You don’t want it to read like a resume, but instead to speak about what your life looks like . Be sure to tell specific stories, such as what happened when you met each other, activities you have done together, any of the trips you’ve taken, or the love your parents will offer as grandparents.

Be Authentic

Don’t lie or exaggerate. Birth parents want you to be real with your profile so they get a true picture of what you offer to a child. If you are adopting with a partner, consider writing each other’s bios. This allows you to be more personable and avoid missing important details that describe who you are as a person.

Use a Professional and Candid Profile Photo

Your photo needs to draw in the birth parents, so be sure your profile photo is a combination of professional outdoor and candid fun. Instead of stiff studio portraits, consider your lifestyle and what will best show them who you are. Since you just have a few seconds to catch their eye, make sure your picture stands out.

Use Humor

Although adoption is a very serious subject, you don’t want to come off as cold or corporate. You want people to see you as you really are, loving and fun, providing a home filled with joy and laughter. Humor can go a long way in telling the story of your life, while also making you stand out.

Think Through Your Layout

Finally, be sure you give thought to how your copy and images relate to each other. You want everything to connect and make it easy for the birth parents to understand your story. Follow a logical flow with images that help bring your words to life. Don’t forget to add captions or descriptions for all of your photos.
