As the largest county in the state of Kansas, Johnson County has never been wanting for recreational activities. Our beautiful area is home to parks, gardens, and facilities for the entire family to enjoy year-round. That’s not all, though. This December, the county is offering a host of activities made especially for the festive season. Make sure not to miss out on all of these fun holiday activities!
- The Holiday Marketplace is open to all ages–families and lone shoppers alike. This one-day market is full of local vendors to help you and your family find the perfect holiday gifts. They even provide volunteers to take the younger members of your family shopping and help them with gift-wrapping! With visits from Santa, arts-and-crafts sessions, and gingerbread house building, the morning is guaranteed to be a great time to get you and your family into the holiday spirit!
- Speaking of Santa, the Holiday Marketplace won’t be his only appearance in Johnson County. He’ll also be appearing at the Roeland Park Community Center for a Breakfast with Santa. For those more educationally inclined, he’ll be explaining the winter habitats of his famous animal pals and conducting an arts-and-crafts session in addition to the traditional gift-givings and wish lists.
- Santa isn’t the only one concerned with the habitat this winter. There’s still time to take part in the 18th annual KC WildLands Native Christmas Tree Event at Mildale Farm. This gives Johnson County natives the chance to help clean up the environment by removing the invasive red cedar trees and repurposing them as festive decorations. Find your tree, from the tiny Charlie Brown specials to towering giants, and take one home with you! All proceeds go to Kansas conservation efforts.
- The Park and Recreation District have its hands full this year, as it’s also hosting a Retro Christmas Celebration at the Johnson County Museum. This is a program for all ages, with yet another visit from Santa in addition to the main attraction: An interactive and engaging experience showing how the holidays were celebrated in times past.
- After you’ve found your tree and given your wish list to Santa, you and the kids can wind down with a movie. The Happy Elf will be playing at the Black Box Theatre this December and is guaranteed to be a fun, relaxing film for viewers of all ages.
Some of these events require registration before attending, so make sure to check the Johnson County events page for more details on dates, registration, and fees! And remember–the holidays are a time for families of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds.
