The autumn season is full of ways to celebrate. Decorating pumpkins, attending corn mazes, festivals, and Halloween movies galore! Parents of the littlest autumn lovers know that picking an activity that is fun, but not scary, is key for allowing your family to enjoy the season. Here are five ways to celebrate Halloween, minus the spookiness.
- Paint Pumpkins. Carving pumpkins can become overwhelming for young children. You don’t want them to handle sharp objects to cut the pumpkin, but you want them to enjoy this seasonal pastime. Invite paint to your pumpkin party! A few acrylic paints and brushes provide the perfect hands-on activity to decorate your pumpkin in a child-friendly style. For especially small children, putting their hand or footprints on the pumpkin is a fun way to mark their first Halloween.
- Read a book. There are many Halloween themed books for young children! Take a trip to your local library to check out a few, or order them online to read for years to come. Some books for younger children include Five Little Pumpkins, Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch, and Room on a Broom.
- Bake a Halloween treat. Baking together as a family is a wonderful experience! Children can help measure, pour, and mix ingredients. This can be a fun time to introduce seasonal flavors like pumpkin and apple or stick to old classics with a seasonal twist. Maybe you have a favorite family recipe, or you just want to find one. Either way, baking with children is a great way to enjoy autumn.
- Have a movie night. Have a special movie night with your Halloween themed treats and a Halloween movie. A less spooky title like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a good pick for younger children and typically plays on local broadcast networks at least once during the Halloween season.
- Attend a local event. Autumn is full of festivals, carnivals, and other Halloween events. The weather is cool and everyone is happy to be outside in the fresh air. Events at local libraries, farms, and fairs are all perfect for making new family memories. Here are some events in Kansas and Missouri to get you started.
