Summer’s more than halfway gone, so it’s time to squeeze in some last-minute fun before the kids head back to school! Here are some events and activities happening in August in Kansas City.

Festival of Butterflies, August 1-3 and 8-10.
Location: Powell Gardens.
Powell Gardens’ signature festival is back for its 18th year. Educational and fun, this two-weekend event is a great way to expose children to the smaller side of nature and wildlife conservation.

Location: Kansas Speedway.
New Mexico might have the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival, but we have the Great Midwest Balloon Fest. The week’s events will include a 5K race, a BBQ contest, tethered balloon rides, and a Battle of the Bands.

Ethnic Enrichment Festival, August 15-17.
Location: Swope Park.
This is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the U.S.! The Ethnic Enrichment Festival will feature 60+ varying cultures, who will be selling their native foods and crafts, as well as performing ethnic music and dances.

Kansas City Kosher BBQ Competition and Festival, August 17.
Location:  Ritz Charles, Overland Park KS.
Speaking of barbecue, a Kansas City summer wouldn’t be complete without a good, old fashioned BBQ competition. With its Kosher BBQ Pit serving up delicious grub, no one will leave hungry from this event.

Kansas City Irish Festival, August 29-31.
Location: Crown Center Square.
Whether you’re Irish or not, this year’s Irish Festival is sure to be a fun event for the whole family. Irish performers, Irish drinks, and local artisans are just a few of the many features of the Irish Festival.
