A question I get asked often is if single parents can adopt and, even more specifically, if single males can adopt. While the answer is yes, there are some limitations and particular avenues that a single parent may want to consider over others. In an earlier blog, I shared the 6 Avenues of Adoption where I discussed what each adoption process entails; however, the three I’ll be discussing in this blog post are the avenues single parents have had the most success with.
- If you’re a single male, fostering is your best option.
Not many agencies or international countries work with single males, but the foster care system most likely will. - If you’re single, consider working with consultants, adopting through foster care, or adopting internationally.
I’ve found that most of the singles who adopted a child had the most success going these routes. - If you’re single, expect difficulty.
Adopting as a single parent is harder than adopting as a couple. Adoption has layers and the more layers you add, the harder it’ll be to adopt. When a mother is faced with an unplanned pregnancy, she comes to an agency often in search of adoptive couple. If you’re a single person, you’ll find yourself repeatedly passed over for a couple.
While it’s not impossible to adopt as a single person, as some expecting parents are perfectly fine placing their child in the care of a responsible single adult, it’s certainly more difficult. That’s why the avenue in which you choose to adopt is important, as it can greatly increase your success as a single parent.
