Adoption can be a long and challenging journey for hopeful adoptive families. One common question that arises is when you should tell your family that you are adopting. In my most recent video, I looked into this question and offered some of my best advice for families considering adoption:

  • Tell your family from day one.
I recommend telling your family from the beginning that you are considering adoption. This is important for several reasons, including getting references from family as part of the adoption process. Tell them from the beginning so they can get used to the idea, so they’re excited for you, and so you’re not having to manage and educate them at the same time that you’re trying to develop a relationship with an expecting mom.
  • Share resources.
I recommend reading the book In on It by Elisabeth O’Toole and sharing it with your family. This will help educate them about the adoption process and will allow them to feel included.
  • Set boundaries.
Adoption can take a long time and it can be overwhelming to field questions from family and friends all the time. I suggest setting boundaries and asking your loved ones to support you by not constantly asking for updates.

Telling your family that you’re adopting can be a difficult and emotional decision. However, these strategies can help make the process smoother and less stressful. By telling your family from the beginning, sharing resources, and setting boundaries, you can ensure that your loved ones are there to support you throughout your adoption journey.
