Many families come to us asking what the education requirements are for adopting. The easy answer to this question is that it depends. Here are the education requirements for the three most common avenues of adoption:

Foster care adoption – The training is pretty straightforward. It’s approximately 30 hours of training and is generally ten weeks long. However, some states have additional training for the adoption portion. Since COVID, some of these training sessions are now being done online.

International adoption – Generally, you’ll need anywhere from 10 to 12 hours of Hague training which is particular training geared towards adopting a child from another country. Depending on which country or agency you’re adopting through, you may require additional training. Our families, for instance, are required to do a little more training because Adoption & Beyond goes beyond the normal Hague requirements. This ensures that our families are empowered to be the best parents they can be to the child they adopt.

Domestic adoption – There isn’t a set standard as far as education goes, so it really just depends on a particular agency’s requirements. As aforementioned, Adoption & Beyond is a huge advocate of proper and thorough education so that our families are as prepared as ever. We offer reading material, online courses, and training for open, trans-racial, and older child adoptions. While these are what’s offered through our agency, every agency is different. Some don’t require any education, which is a real disservice to families but is the reality of domestic adoption now.
