Letter of Introduction

"Make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it."

~ Edward Bok ~

We both grew up in small rural towns with strong family values. The above quote nicely summarizes the way our communities taught us to treat those around us: give unto others, more than you receive from them. Despite Derek growing up in Illinois, and Flo growing up in upstate New York, these shared values led to us meeting in graduate school where we obtained PhDs in school psychology. Our values influenced our careers helping people – specifically, children. This effort brought us to each other. We look forward to sharing these values with our growing family, which we hope might include your child, you, and your family.

The two of us delayed starting a family until we established roots in a community. Following our graduate training, we worked for several years in the Boston area and fell in love with the quaint New England towns. Despite our love for the area, we never felt “at home” there ... then an incredible career opportunity presented itself at the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk!) and we jumped at the opportunity. Kansas has the charms of New England, the values of rural America, and the diversity and cultural opportunities we love to experience. It was here that we wanted to build our family.

Since we met in 2004, we knew we wanted to grow our family through adoption. Many of our friends, students, colleagues, and extended family members are part of an adoptive family. They have shared their experiences and stories; some as adoptive parents, some as birth parents, and some as children in the relationship. Each story is unique, yet all are inspiring. We appreciate the different roads that lead people to adoptive relationships, and we appreciate that not all adoptive relationships look the same. We are hoping that an adoptive relationship connects families into a larger, extended one. What this looks like will be up to you. It is important to us that your child knows his or her family, and understands that a shared love brought us all together.

Thank you for reviewing our adoption profile and giving us a chance. Our hope is that we have the opportunity to meet you in person and learn more about you, your family, and your story.

Humbly,

Derek and Flo

About Us

Derek's Family

I come from a close-knit family who will be actively involved in your child's life. I have one brother, two step-siblings, and two sets of parents who are eager to welcome your child into our family! My mother passed away suddenly last year, but my step-father remains an important part of our family.

While my family is from Illinois, they enjoy joining us on our many adventures, whether it's a silly trip to Disney, a wedding vow renewal on the beaches of Mexico, or cheering our favorite team at a local homecoming parade.

Flo's Family

My nieces and nephews are excitedly waiting for a new cousin to play with. My parents and siblings are already "fighting" over who will be the favorite grandparent/aunt/uncle!

Although our families live miles apart (in NY, TX, and FL), we make a real effort to remain close and spend time together. We vacation together, share holidays, and are an active presence in each other's lives.

Activities We Enjoy

We have a love of learning that is reflected in the hobbies we pursue. We enjoy traveling, hiking, reading, ceramics, visiting museums, exercise, and spending time at the ocean or in the mountains. We pursue these activities mostly together, though we do have separate interests. For example, Derek really loves building watches and learning about how they work. Flo indulges in this passion through her gift giving, but lets him pursue this passion on his own. Flo is in a book club with four other women who enjoy their monthly gab sessions and intellectual pursuits without their partners present! Check out our family photos to explore some of the adventures we've enjoyed pursuing our hobbies!
